Nowadays, the demand for printed matter using special ink (such as gold, silver, pearlescent, and fluorescent ink) to improve their quality is increasing.  In actuality, no matter how high-quality the products and services are, it will be hard for them to carry a good image if the packaging and advertising posters are not good.  This results from the fact that products and packages are regarded as the same thing .

In fact, there are many people interested in how printed matter using special inks are made, and what should be done in order to develop the desired quality.  We sincerely wish that by looking over this special issue of MEGAMI, these interests will be satisfied.

MEGAMI INK proudly presents the “2007 MEGAMI INK Calendar (photo on left)” as its sample for printed matter using pearlescent ink. We had an interview with the cooperating designer and  printing office to ask about the process of making the calendar, and for advice on making printed matter using special inks.

UV 6 (six) color printing machine with a chamber coater unit Six different kinds of waterbased polarized pearlescent coatings, made of pearlescent pigments and designed to produce an interference effect of light by a difference in the refractive index of mica stone and titanium oxide, were printed in the first off-line run on a chamber coater unit. In the second run, UV process color inks and UV rich gold ink were printed in the following order: (1) Black (2) Cyan Blue (3) Magenta (4) Yellow (5) Gold
Although polarized pearlescent coatings are typically overcoated, in this printing application the polarized pearlescent coatings were undercoated to enhance their design detail.
